Major coastal projects to boost development have been commissioned in the Central Region by the Ministry of Works and Housing in the Central Region.

Projects Commissioned
Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, speaking at the event, highlighted the government’s dedication to protecting coastal communities from the destructive impacts of tidal waves while fostering sustainable livelihoods.

“These projects are not just about protecting our coastlines but also about building opportunities for our people,” he noted.

The Acting Regional Coordinating Director, Mr. Bless Kwame Darkey, representing the Regional Minister, praised the projects as a testament to the government’s commitment to equitable development across the region.

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford expressed her gratitude for the projects, pledging continued collaboration to ensure the success and sustainability of these initiatives.

Traditional leaders from Elmina, Komenda, Egyaa, and Akong commended the government and urged community members to support and maintain the infrastructure.

The Central Region saw a landmark moment as several transformative coastal projects were commissioned and inaugurated by the Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, accompanied by key dignitaries, including the Acting Chief Director of the Central Regional Coordinating Council (CRCC), Mr. Bless Kwame Darkey, who represented the Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan. Also in attendance was the Member of Parliament for Mfantsiman Consistuency and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford, alongside Municipal/Metropolitan Chief Executives (MCEs) and traditional leaders.

The projects, aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of coastal erosion and promoting economic growth, include the commissioning of the Elmina Coastal Protection Project, Komenda Coastal Protection Project, a modern landing bay, a fish market, and a cold store. The sod was also cut to commence the Egyaa 3 and Akong Coastal Protection Project.

Elmina and Komenda Coastal Protection Projects
The completed coastal protection projects in Elmina and Komenda have been designed to shield vulnerable communities from sea erosion, safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure. In addition, the modern landing bay, fish market, and cold store in Komenda are expected to revolutionize the local fishing industry, reducing post-harvest losses and improving incomes.

Egyaa 3 and Akong Coastal Protection
The sod-cutting ceremony at Egyaa 3 and Akong marks the beginning of another vital project to protect the coastline in these areas. Hon. Oppong Nkrumah assured residents of the government’s commitment to completing the project on schedule, emphasizing its importance in securing the livelihoods of fisherfolk and enhancing local economic activities.

These projects are expected to transform the lives of thousands, fostering economic growth and resilience in the Central Region. They mark a significant step towards achieving sustainable development along Ghana’s coastline.
